Recommended Album: Okkervil River – The Stage Names

Okkervil river the stage names album cover

Indie Rock/Pop. The album isn't strikingly different from much of the current indie music, but it's just done extremely well. What makes it stands apart is the lyricism and delivery. Instead of just an afterthought it's beautifully poetic, and works to carry the album through.

Recommended Album: Battles – Mirrored

Battles Mirrored album cover

Math Rock/Progressive/Electronic/Experimental. "Math Rock" sounds lame. In reality, it is extremely complex and intricate, like the engine in a Porche. Or your father's criminal record. Mirrored blends progressive rock withe electronic instincts for a hypnotic ride.

Recommended album: Caribou – Up in Flames

Caribou Up in Flames

Psychedelic Rock/Pop. This album is the opus of mastermind Dan Snaith and every minute is dripping with beauty. Sounds like skydiving through a fireworks show. The percussion on this album is the most memorable, explosive live drumming as well as electronic percussion as well.

Recommended Album: Madvillain – Madvillainy

Madvillain - Madvillainy

Rap/Hip-Hop: The first collaboration between Madlib and MF DOOM. The lyrics are strong and more lighthearted than most. Fantastic beats, short songs and few choruses. The album is fast paced so nothing feels like it drags on for too long.

Leaked: Broken Social Scene – Forgiveness Rock Record

Broken social scene album cover

Broken Social Scene's first album in five years has hit the net. Sounds like a natural evolution from their previous work, with more of a world music feel than the summery, beachy sound of their self titled album. Far and beyond my two favorites are below.

Dan Deacon remixes Owen Pallett

owen pallett cover VS. Dan Deacon in suit

I haven't heard of Owen Pallett, but Dan Deacon twists his vocal harmonies into a floating dance party. I would love to see more collaborations between these two.

ETHEREA remixes Animal Collective’s ‘College’

Etherea free album cover

I haven't heard of Etherea, but after this song he seems worth paying close attention to. The original song is a super dirty sounding recording featuring vocal harmonies, eventually culminating with the lyrics "You don't have to go to college." So this seems to be less of a remix and more of its own piece entirely.

Ethera - College (Remix)

Best of all, he's released his first album free which contains a number of other remixes. You can grab it over at i guess i'm floating.

Recommended Album: Giraffes? Giraffes! – More Skin With Milk-Mouth

Giraffes Giraffes - More skin with milk mouth album cover

Rock/Progressive/Math Rock. Intense progressive from a two man guitar/drum combo. Extremely intricate and technical sound. These two are capable of producing more music than you would think. The song titles provide accurate descriptions of their music:

1. When the catholic girls go camping, the nicotine vampires rule supreme.
2. I am s/h(im)e[r] as you am s/h(im)e[r] as you are me and we am I and I are all our together:
Our collective consciousness’ psychogenic fugue
3. The ghost of EPPEEPEE’s ghost
4. Emilie Sagée’s secret
5. A quick one, while she’s away

Pretty brilliant.

Recommended Album: Bacamarte – Depois do Fim

Symphonic/Progressive/Rock. One of the only albums to be released by the Brazilian band, and almost thirty years later it remains a progressive masterpiece. Heavy female vocals and synthesizers with excellent musicianship overall. The sound is frenzied but elegant and spacey. This album is too often overlooked but excellent all around.
