Recommended Album: Okkervil River – The Stage Names

Indie Rock/Pop. The album isn't strikingly different from much of the current indie music, but it's just done extremely well. What makes it stands apart is the lyricism and delivery. Instead of just an afterthought it's beautifully poetic, and works to carry the album through.

Recommended Album: Battles – Mirrored

Math Rock/Progressive/Electronic/Experimental. "Math Rock" sounds lame. In reality, it is extremely complex and intricate, like the engine in a Porche. Or your father's criminal record. Mirrored blends progressive rock withe electronic instincts for a hypnotic ride.

Recommended Album: White Denim – Fits

Garage / Psychedelic Rock / Acid Blues. I'll be honest, I just found out about this album last week through gorilla versus bear's top albums of 2009 on which it was number two. Overall the sound is a pretty standard rock setup, guitars, drums and bass. What does it is the song structures and blended musical styles, making it accessible and unique at the same time. Watch this band.

Recommended album: Caribou – Up in Flames

Psychedelic Rock/Pop. This album is the opus of mastermind Dan Snaith and every minute is dripping with beauty. Sounds like skydiving through a fireworks show. The percussion on this album is the most memorable, explosive live drumming as well as electronic percussion as well.
Streaming: The New Pornographers – Together

The New Pornographers plan to release their upcoming album Together on May 4th, but it's available streaming now via NPR. Direct link below.

Recommended Album: Madvillain – Madvillainy

Rap/Hip-Hop: The first collaboration between Madlib and MF DOOM. The lyrics are strong and more lighthearted than most. Fantastic beats, short songs and few choruses. The album is fast paced so nothing feels like it drags on for too long.

Dan Deacon remixes Owen Pallett
VS.
I haven't heard of Owen Pallett, but Dan Deacon twists his vocal harmonies into a floating dance party. I would love to see more collaborations between these two.
ETHEREA remixes Animal Collective’s ‘College’

I haven't heard of Etherea, but after this song he seems worth paying close attention to. The original song is a super dirty sounding recording featuring vocal harmonies, eventually culminating with the lyrics "You don't have to go to college." So this seems to be less of a remix and more of its own piece entirely.
Best of all, he's released his first album free which contains a number of other remixes. You can grab it over at i guess i'm floating.
